Battery Recycling Scheme

Did you know that battery recycling has recently become available in Cyprus as well? The company in charge for the scheme is afiscyprus and the scheme started just in late September / early October 2009.

How can you recycle? (It has never been simpler!)

1. Recycle bins are now found in many places (supermarkets-shops, schools etc) where you can take your batteries for recycling.
2. Order your own FREE RECYCLE BIN. You can put one in your office, another one in your school and so on.
3. After the bin is full APPLY FOR FREE EMPTY EMPTYING!

Battery recycling is extremely important for several reasons:

1. The majority of primary and secondary cells contain metals that are potentially toxic to the environment such as nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride and mercury.
   
2. Whilst the chemical structure varies from battery type whether primary [non –rechargeable] or secondary [rechargeable] most batteries contain heavy metals, which are the cause for environmental concern.
   
3. By recycling we prolong the life of a battery.
   
4. Recycling helps reducing the volume of the general waste, hence prolonging the lifetime of a waste land field.
