Hi Patricia, thanks for your comment, though it makes me really really sad. I just did my last survey here in Scotland on Friday, and returned to Cyprus yesterday...This is not the reality I was hoping to face, though I know things are really bad for conservation in Cyprus.

Is there something that citizens can do? What is your advice? How can we raise more awareness about this issue?

Patricia posting. I'm afraid the fruitbats are more or less lost. The Department of Environment just sits back.
They recenly received an EU LIFE grant for millions, and all they are going to do is to plant chiroptiverous trees around the Mammari cave roost, which is more or less empty. What about the ones in the Paphos forest that are ruthlessly shot and burned? In Pissouri a roost of 7000 has been allowed to go bust. Disgusted.

Hello, I am not currently in Cyprus so I'm not very aware of what is happening there at the moment but you could contact the Environmental Commissioner of Cyprus on +357 22803460 or ctheopemptou@ec.gov.cy, I'm sure he would be happy to help you out.

Also, Patricia Radnor, coordinator of Animal Responsibility Cyprus, on +357 99499580 e-mail: arc.kivotos@cytanet.com.cy she has experience of the bat situation in Cyprus and I'm sure she can give you info/contacts. It sounds like a really interesting project and I would like to see it/advertise it on this blog when it is done.

Thank you very much for this post. I'm a radio journalist in the United States, and will be spending time in Cyprus in late June. I might be doing a story for a program called The World (theworld.org) about the status of bats in Cyprus. I'm wondering who you might suggest I speak with about this issue and where I might go when I'm in Cyprus. Where is the situation particularly bad and who would know about that, and where might things be improving?

Mr. Theopemptou that makes me very sad...if these things are known, why isn't there any action being taken? And whose side is the Environment Service on? Where are their studies saying these bats are not affected?

(I am not sure if there is anything we can do YiuPi...last time we demonstrated for Akamas, they came at us with rocks.
Some people are so passionate for money they destroy millions of years of evolution in minutes, whether it be humans or other animals. If anyone has any ideas though, I would be very interested in hearing them)

Things are getting worse for bats in Cyprus.
In places like Pissouri they disappeared and one explanation is that they migrated to Turkey.
In Mamari they killed them all (with nail guns and fire) in the hope that the cave will not be declared Nature 2000 protected. They also plowed the fields once they discovered that there was a protected plant there.
In Akamas they gave permit to expand the quarry over one of the most well known caves with bats. The Environment Service insists that there is no danger to the Bats. If they performed explosions over my roof I would leave for sure ....
Bats are listed in the top seven most important species of the ecosystem.
Remember ... an insect eating bat eats 2000 insects every night!

SO CUTE! To think people would kill these things. They are practically harmless and eat insects so you would be lucky if you had one in your house :)

i have not read anything new about the Androlikou quarry since the summer when I was in Cyprus and thought they finally took away the licence. Are they still quarrying? If you have any info I would be really interested to know.

How can the government allow the expansion of the illegal quarry at Androlikou? Fruit bats are just one species of wildlife that will be affected, not to mention they don't own the land they're blasting!
